About Rephrase
Rewrite selected text in any app with a local AI model.
What it does
- Hotkey palette. Select text anywhere, press Control+Option+Space and pick an action: fix grammar, shorten, expand, change tone, translate, summarize or bullet points.
- Your model. Works with Ollama, LM Studio or any OpenAI-compatible server. The text only goes to the server you choose.
- Custom actions and snippets. Add your own actions, and expand abbreviations such as ;sig in any app.
Notes
macOS asks for Accessibility permission (to copy and paste) and Input Monitoring (for snippets). You need a model server such as Ollama running. This demo was compiled and launched; the hotkey, replace and snippet features have not been tested end to end.

The prompt behind it
This app was generated from the prompt below. Paste it into SiliconDevKit to build your own version, then change it however you like.
Build a menu bar app called Rephrase that transforms the text you are writing in any app. Select text anywhere and press the global hotkey Control+Option+Space (registered with the Carbon RegisterEventHotKey API). A floating palette opens near the mouse cursor. The app copies the selection by sending Cmd+C with CGEvent (this needs the Accessibility permission: show a first-run explainer with a button that opens System Settings, and fall back to the current clipboard text if permission is missing). The palette lists actions you pick with the arrow keys and Return or the number keys: Fix grammar, Shorten, Expand, Change tone (Professional, Friendly, Casual), Translate (with a language picker), Summarize, Bullet points. The user can add, edit, reorder and delete custom actions, each with a name and an instruction, saved as JSON in Application Support. Each action runs on a language model the user chooses in Settings: Ollama (http://localhost:11434/api/chat, with the installed models listed from /api/tags), LM Studio (OpenAI-compatible, http://localhost:1234/v1/chat/completions) or any other OpenAI-compatible URL with an optional API key kept in the Keychain. Stream the reply into the palette, with Replace (paste the result over the selection with Cmd+V sent through CGEvent, then restore the previous clipboard), Copy and Retry buttons, and Escape to close. Add text snippets: abbreviations such as ;sig or ;addr that expand when typed in any app, using a CGEvent tap (this needs the Input Monitoring permission, so explain it first), managed in a Snippets tab with search and JSON import and export. Show a clear message when no model server is running. No Dock icon. Nothing leaves the Mac except requests to the model server the user chose.
Opening it for the first time
- Open the .dmg and drag Rephrase onto the Applications folder.
- Open it from Applications. macOS may say it can’t check the app for malicious software. Click Done.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. This is needed once. Why this happens. To share an app without the warning, see how to notarize it.
