About Color Picker
A tiny menu bar eyedropper: click, pick any color on screen, get the hex.
What it does
- Pick anything on screen. Click the eyedropper in the menu bar and the cursor becomes a magnifying color sampler (Apple's own NSColorSampler). Click any pixel in any app.
- See it right away. A popup opens under the menu bar icon with a swatch of the color and its hex code, like #7C3AED.
- Copy or pick again. One button copies the hex, another picks a new color, and the code is selectable text.
Notes
The whole app is one 92-line Swift file with no Dock icon. It was built from a single short prompt through silicondevkit.com in about 43 seconds, and it is the page's template: use it as a starting point to add RGB or HSL output, a history of picked colors or a global shortcut.

The prompt behind it
This app was generated from the prompt below. Paste it into SiliconDevKit to build your own version, then change it however you like.
make a tiny mac app with an icon in the menu bar that when clicked changes cursor to color picker - then when user clicks, popup appears below menu bar icon with clicked color is shown (standard color picker mini app) in html color notation (hex?)
What it cost
Every AI run that made this demo, one per line. Model: Claude Sonnet 5.5. Tokens are shown as (in / out). “In” counts everything the model read, including text it had already seen in the session at a reduced price.
| Initial prompt(169k in / 2k out) | $0.1074 | |
| = | Total(169k in / 2k out) | $0.1074 |
About $0.11 in total. AI usage only: hosting and the Mac that compiled it are not included.
Version tree
Every change to this app is a new version. Use any build as a template to start your own copy from it; forks that their makers shared appear as branches.

make a tiny mac app with an icon in the menu bar that when clicked changes cursor to color picker - then when user clicks, popup appears below menu bar icon with clicked color is shown (standard color picker mini app) in html color notation (hex?)
A menu bar eyedropper that picks any color on screen and shows its hex code in a popup.
Opening it for the first time
- Open the .dmg and drag Color Picker onto the Applications folder.
- Open it from Applications. macOS may say it can’t check the app for malicious software. Click Done.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. This is needed once. Why this happens. To share an app without the warning, see how to notarize it.
